Sarah Palin's Big Lie

Sarah Palin's speech tonight said, "I found a few things in the governor's office that I didn't think that the tax payers should have to pay for...I've protected the tax payers..."

But here's the thing.  There are no tax payers in Alaska.  Alaska has no state sales tax and no state income tax.  87% of the non-earmarked revenue in the Alaskan budget comes from taxes on oil companies.  Another $2 Billion comes from federal earmarks and subsidies.

For a governor of Alaska to brag about balancing the state budget and "protecting" tax payers is obscene!  All they have to do is collect money from big oil and sign checks to the citizens of Alaskans who wait for their free handouts from the state like hungry little birds.

They say Palin's daughter is a private family matter and shouldn't be covered... Then why the heck should there be national abstinence programs or laws on abortions?

Then why even bring her family into the campaign as a 'family values' talking point? They want their cake and eat it, too. "Look! My son is in the military! Look! We're a family! Oh, no, You're not allowed to rebut this with any negative points. That's a low-blow."

Her family goes to the very core of her flaws in leadership. No birth control results in having a kid... at 44 years old... which turns out to have Down's Syndrome (which is related to the age of the mother). There are reasons why 44 year old women either use protection or get themselves or their partner sterilized.

Abstinence education (plus no birth control) is directly tied into her own daughter getting pregnant at 17 years old and out of wedlock.
Her questionable judgement has put her entire family at risk, and she wants to see her judgement exported at a national level.

No. Her family is almost a banner case against her own policies.

I'm a conservative Republican and even I think this woman is a crash and burn mistake. Ugh. It's going to be a rough 4 years.

The funny thing about Alaskans is that not only don't they pay state income or sales taxes but they also typically scream bloody murder about the feds "wasting my tax dollars" if there's a project or program in the rest of the country they disagree with. This from a state that is the leader in per capita federal pork! Hilarious.

Sales tax, real estate tax, business taxes, the list goes on... so people do pay taxes in Alaska.

Anon: We still pay federal income tax to the IRS, so we may legitimately scream bloody murder about the feds wasting our tax dollars.

"Sales tax, real estate tax, business taxes, the list goes on... so people do pay taxes in Alaska."

But there is no STATE sales tax. Property taxes are LOCAL (i.e. city and county affairs). The Government of Alaska DOES NOT TAX the same way that Governments of the other 49 states do. Even the other states with no state income taxes have state sales taxes. This means that Governor Palin never had to make any tough decisions about distributive issues. That is, she never had to make tough choices about who's pet project got cut or who's latest tax cut got repealed to balance the budget. Alaskan state (87% of it) revenue just appears as if by political magic from the permanent fund. There's no pain to the "taxpayers" and no political costs imposed for making "the tough choices." Palin has never had to make that kind of decision.

Oh, and to all those federal tax payers in Alaska. You guys get way more money back from the Feds (money contributed by all us "libruls" in states like New York and California) than you contribute to the Federal coffers. You guys are like a whole state of welfare queens with shaggy beards and flannel shirts.

So what you're saying, then, is that energy conservation, any reduction in the use of oil, will be BAD for the people of Alaska, and President Palin will NOT ALLOW anything bad to happen to the Christians in Alaska, such as a reduction in the amount of money they're making from oil? Is that what you're saying?

Yeah, I think so. Energy Conservation is BAD for the people of Alaska, and so there will be NONE Of THAT !!

Um, She does protect the taxpayers... i.e. the OIL company. So not a lie outright, just misleading and underhanded shenanigans.

Raised By Republicans said...

I think Anonymous 5:44 is right. The way Alaska gets its revenue the quickest and easiest way to increase revenue (and increase the size of those free give away checks from the state) is to increase the flow of oil through the pipelines. Since the reserves up there are starting to decline, the best way to do that is to increase the number of wells. That means DRILL BABY DRILL.

Also, reducing demand for oil down in the "lower 48" will reduce the value of the oil flowing through the pipes. That too would reduce the revenue stream to the state of Alaska. That means Alaskan politicians want minimal investment in alternative fuels. It also means any investment in way to power cars with something other than gasoline will be focussed on technologies that are a long way from being ready for production. That means, some of money for hydrogen fuel cells and no money for electric or hybrid engines.

We've seen what happens to this country and its economy when you hand over control to politicians from oil producing states (Bush is from Texas and Cheney is either from Texas or Wyoming depending on whether he's running for something or not). Alaska is even more dependent on oil than Texas is (if you can believe it).

GOOD ONE! Anonymous 6:03!

Alaskans get check from the state? Is this why Gov. Palin flew back to Alaska from the lower 48 to have her last baby prematurely?

Raised By Republicans said...

Every year instead of filling out a state income tax return like the rest of us, Alaskans get a check for (usually) about $1000 to $1500. The money is the surplus revenue from the permanent fund which was set up by the Oil companies are part of their deal with the Alaskan state government to build the pipeline back in 1976.

So you see, Santa Clause really does live near the North Pole and he looks just like who ever the governor of Alaska is at the time.

zombieBlanco said...

So, no income or state sales taxes, plus a little rebate each year? I guess my question about the baby is this: do you need to be born in Alaska or just live there to qualify for the check? Thanks for the info!

The Law Talking Guy said...

You have to live in Alaska, zombieblanco. There's a residency requirement of some kind. You can read more about it at. http://www.apfc.org/home/Content/reportspublications/fundHistoryB.cfm

The "permanent fund dividend" or PFD as it is called was $1,654 last year.

According to www.tax.alaska.gov/programs/documentviewer/viewer.aspx?255, Alaska's state revenue comes as follows:
$5.2 billion from oil, $3.9 billion from investments, $2.0 from the federal government (!), and $1.2 billion from "other" including fees, business taxes, etc. Look at the federal figure. The Alaska government gets 80% more revenue from the rest of us than it does from the people of Alaska!!

So how hard is it to be Alaska's governor? Palin has never faced the tough choices about taxes and spending that the other 49 governors do.

Combined with the Federal tax "rebates" Alaskians got something like $3000-$5000 back. Gee, I wonder how much homeland security money they get to protect that pipeline?

From a recent NPR article quoting:
an economist and columnist for the Anchorage Daily News, Gregg Erickson "There's very few areas where she had any policy initiatives, and there are no areas that I can think of where any of those initiatives were carried to fruition . . . He says Palin's single-minded focus on oil taxes and the gas pipeline has left little time for much else.

He says a number of disgruntled legislators say Palin and her staff have little interest in mundane tasks such as getting control of Medicaid spending."

And from Rebecca Braun is the publisher and editor of the Alaska Budget Report. "Of course, during her time in office we've had these unbelievable surpluses, so there's been zero pressure to actually cut the budget and make those decisions."
