So, I got to thinking this morning. We, the citizens of the United States, need universal health insurance. Tuesday night, we just bought the world's largest insurance company for $85 billion. I see a solution here. Don't you?

I got it! We trade it to Canada in exchange for a train load of generic Viagra!!
So I keep hearing references to McCain's plan to consider our health benefits as taxable income. Can someone post some details on that?
Here's how he puts it, "John McCain Will Reform The Tax Code To Offer More Choices Beyond Employer-Based Health Insurance Coverage. While still having the option of employer-based coverage, every family will receive a direct refundable tax credit - effectively cash - of $2,500 for individuals and $5,000 for families to offset the cost of insurance. Families will be able to choose the insurance provider that suits them best and the money would be sent directly to the insurance provider. Those obtaining innovative insurance that costs less than the credit can deposit the remainder in expanded Health Savings Accounts."
What this means is "your employer can ditch coverage and just let you take the tax credit."
Of course, once you make purchasing insurance an individual rather than a group project, you lose all the bargaining power. Ever tried to buy health insurance as an individual?
