Well, he's kind of had it in for me ever since I accidentally ran over his dog. Actually, replace "accidentally" with "repeatedly," and replace "dog" with "son."

Pettiness

The California Supreme Court refused to stay its own ruling on same-sex marriage yesterday. In response, the Kern County Clerk's office (Bakersfield) announced that they would stop solemnizing weddings altogether next week. They will still issue marriage licenses, as the law requires. And life goes on.

Jerry Brown is going smack them down something fierce. Mandamus, anyone?

Counties are not required to offer services to solemnize weddings, and not all do. So I am not sure if what they are doing is strictly illegal. (Is it?) But it sure is petty.

What is bigotry if not petty? Very sad. I hope these obstrunctionists will be circumvented.

There are cases from the 1960s about public schools in the south. Basically, states closed down all public schools rather than integrate. These were overturned.

In CA, mandamus runs fairly far. I expect Jerry Brown will hit them hard and do his best to make this a costly decision in order to discourage other counties from doing the same.
