Well, he's kind of had it in for me ever since I accidentally ran over his dog. Actually, replace "accidentally" with "repeatedly," and replace "dog" with "son."

Bush Republicans Publicize Nuclear Secrets!

Hi Everyone,

While the press is falling all over themselves chasing the latest Republican sex scandal, people may not be noticing that the New York Times is reporting that US Government website published documents seized from Iraq. This was done under pressure from the Republican Congressional Campaign Committee to "leverage the internet(s)" and show how great a decision it was to invade and occupy Iraq. Well, in their efforts to show that Saddam really was trying to build nukes, they published a document that tells you how to build a nuclear bomb.

I think it's fair to say that John Kerry's little gaffe the other day isn't the top news story anymore.

Dr. S. Have you heard of this story? Is there any insight you can give us?

Here's the really funny part: this is from the Administration that castigated journalists for "tellin' the en-my secrets" by "reportin' on our 'telligence."

The hypocrisy is such old news any more. How these people sleep at night is beyond me. It must really suck to be them.

The Nth Country Experiment at Lawrence Livermore (1964-67) showed that two graduate students could design a nuclear bomb in a couple of years without access to classified data or discussions with colleagues. (Note that they did not build such a device--and once developed their plans were immediately classified). Similar experiments have confirmed this basic result.

It sounds to me like these are exactly the sort of blueprints that were accidentally released. The exposure of these secrets is a serious matter, in that the amount of work required to devise the documents is significant and likely out of reach of most non-state actors in a moderate time-frame. But I would not be surprised to learn that similar plans were floating around out there somewhere in the murky swamps of the disaffected.

Control of fissile materials is the key.
