Hi Folks,
In most presidential elections there are several types of candidates. There is the well connected candidate with the blessing of smoke filled room set. There is the charismatic type who relies personality and physical appeal. There is the resume candidate who has done pretty much every job BUT President and is obviously qualified for the job.
Look at the Democratic Party today. The candidate that seems tapped by the smoked filled room is a woman. The charismatic candidate with the rock star image is a black man. Finally, the resume candidate who's worked in many important jobs and is the most qualified is Latino.
Of the top four candidates only John Edwards is a white man.
Food for thought.

By contrast, the GOP is in disarray. Giuliani is pro-choice, pro-gay-rights, twice divorced, and a mean son of a bitch. He can't win the Republican primary. McCain could win the primary, but his "send more troops" stand on the Iraq war will kill him in the general election in 2008 (because the war will, sadly, be continuing or at least winding down). Brownback is too extreme to win the general election. Fred Thompson? They're desperate.
The Dems really do have a glut of good candidates. Any of them could win the general election and any would be a great president. This'll be fun.

I am not at all sure that casting actor and Sen. Fred Thompson in the role of the Republican Presidential nominee is a "desperate" move. It may be brilliant. He is smart, well educated, and acts the part of the good ol' boy. His face is somehow both fresh and familiar. Honestly, I'm worried about his potential candidacy.
I'm worried about Fred Thompson too. He's been out of office for the duration of the war so he's free to take any position on it he likes.
That said, it is interesting that Dobson (the self appointed Pope of Protestant Fundamentalism) is now demanding that Thompson prove that he's not just a Christian but the right sort of Christian. Thompson has said he was baptised into the Church of Christ but Dobson says that statement is insufficient.
So long as the most far out, out of step bloc of Republicans has this strangle hold on their nomination they will be turning out far right wing candidates.
The problem with Thompson is that he's like Bush in that he can campaign as a moderate but will certainly govern as a Theo-fascist.
The wrong Thompson declared for the Republican party. Not Senator (and actor) Fred Thompson, but former Wisconsin Governor (and unknown nationally) Tommy Thompson. Amusing.
