Bell Curve The Law Talking Guy Raised by Republicans U.S. West
Well, he's kind of had it in for me ever since I accidentally ran over his dog. Actually, replace "accidentally" with "repeatedly," and replace "dog" with "son."

DeLay

The more I learn about him, the scarier he gets. Check out this interview with the Washington Times, an outfit that, by all rights, should make him look good. My favorite part? The part where he lists horrible things the judiciary has done, such as judicial review, separation of church and state, and the right to privacy.

(For those of you unfamiliar with neo-con double-speak, that last one really means abortion rights.)

I hope he keeps his name in the press as long as possible. Any publicity is bad for him right now.

The Republican establishment may be starting to distance themselves from Delay. The Wall Street Journal ran an editorial critical of Delay. Now the Washington Times asked him questions about "big government" and the deficit etc.

Of course there were a lot of rediculous soft balls in that interview. For example, framing the questions in terms of spending rather than revenue helps Republicans avoid talking about the Bush tax cuts' effects. Also there is this: "Managing Editor Fran Coombs: Isn't the reason you don't want to name big-ticket items that once you start a program ... it's difficult to get rid of the program?"

Delay is one scary guy. But don't be fooled into thinking that he's the only problem. The problem is the entire Republican leadership of Southern right-wing populists.

Here's a quote from that article:

Mr. DeLay: I blame Congress over the last 50 to 100 years for not standing up and taking its responsibility given to it by the Constitution. The reason the judiciary has been able to impose a separation of church and state that's nowhere in the Constitution is that Congress didn't stop them. The reason we had judicial review is because Congress didn't stop them. The reason we had a right to privacy is because Congress didn't stop them.

Any first year law student would be laughed out of the classroom for saying such stupid things. He's urging that Congress remove the power of judicial review whenever Congress wants to violate the constitution (as the SC would view it). John Marshall, 1803 (a conservative if there ever was one) would be aghast. Ditto his desire to impeach judges.

This make me incredibly angry. Delay (and the whole Republican party that supports him) obviously have no respect for the rule of law or an independent judiciary. That is the cornerstone of our liberty. The proof that God does not love America more than the rest of the world is that Tom Delay has not been struck down by lightning.
