Hi Folks,
In case you weren't paying attention here is an update on what the Republican vision for America is. If you thought the Republicans were the party of small government and low taxes you're wrong. They are the party of crazy crack pot populism, censorship and government control of human reproduction.
Florida Governor Jeb Bush signed a bill yesterday allowing Floridians to shoot people on the street with their concealed handguns if they feel threatened without having to try to get away first. The bill is called the "Stand Your Ground Bill."
There is a company out there that makes a digital device that automatically censors DVDs you rent or buy so that all that offensive sex and violence goes away. Think about it! Now God fearing Christians can see "Braveheart" without all the violence to get in the way of the plot (one wonders what this device would do to "The Passion"). Or they could watch "Sex In the City" reruns without any discussion of sexuality. For now its just something you can buy. How long before these things are mandatory? Ask your local Republicans.
In other news, the Republicans in the House are considering a bill that would make it a federal crime to transport a minor across state lines for an abortion to avoid a state law requiring parental notification.
Anyone out there alarmed?

The Republican Vision For America

It's all part of the Evangelical Agenda that the Republican Party has signed onto. They don't want you to be free to practice your religion--they want you to practice their religion. (Episcopalians, Catholics, Methodists, Presbyterians, Lutherans, Jews, Muslims, Hindus, Sikhs, Mormons--look out!) They don't want you to decide how to raise your children--they want to decide how to raise your children. They don't want you to speak freely--they want to be the only ones who can speak freely.
The Evangelicals have declared war on people of faith (and everyone else) across America. In the face of ths threat, the rest of us must all hang together, or (as Franklin put it) we will surely hang separately.
Yes, they want to decide how to raise your children...and by the way, you have to have children. But if you are Gay and happen to have children, you won't be allowed to raise them.

The good folks of Jacksonville, Florida, probably wish they had had the "Stand Your Ground" bill back in 1960 on Axe Handle Saturday .
That is a little remembered event where the upstanding citizens of the city handed out piles of axe handles to each other and then went about smashing the heads of black people in the downtown area.

A Swedish friend of mine (ours) once had a poster on his wall showing a Czech protester standing in front of a Soviet Tank. The caption read, "Same Communists Then As Now." (or something in Swedish very much like that). I'm inclined to assert something along the same lines with regard to the Southern, White (Christian), populist right.

Hey! Equating communists with conservative, southern christians is unfair... to the communists.

Referring to Marxist-Leninists?

There is a rather ironic similarity isn't there.

I find these "editing" companies really disturbing. When interviewed, the heads of these organizations talk about how this is "just like airline movies or movies aired on TV." Which is bull. While most movie directors have little say in edited versions of their pictures (Spielberg being a notable exception), the problem with things like ClearPlay is that the editing tends to take out *anything* they don't like without any regard for plot structure or story arcs.
I also think that the commercial value of edited content is limited, despite what the fundies say. Consider "Sex and the City."
"Sex and the City" is airing in a heavily edited format on TBS, and the ratings are very, very low. Accordng to my leggy red-headed entertainment-lawyer-friend, the ratings are not justifying the immense price that was paid for the syndication rights. Having watched the edited and unedited versions, the edited stuff is like drinking caffeine-free Diet Coke. Except for the clothes, nothing interesting is left. Editing out the nudity didn't help, but the real problem is that the frank (ok, almost medical) discussion of sex and relationships couldn't stand up to the cable treatment.
