Today, Energy Secretary Chu said in a Senate hearing that Yucca Mountain was no longer an option for storing the nation's nuclear waste. This means that they will be going back the drawing board on nuclear waste storage. I can only presume this is for Harry Reid's benefit.

Sigh. So now a poor solution has been replaced by no solution at all. The original design, which was twisted by political calculations, has now been killed by different political calculations. The score: Politics 2, Science 0.
Hooray.
Maybe it will be the Crawford Ranch Project now.
This is not a good thing. Even if you're against nuclear power, the waste is already here--sitting in the equivalent of 40 year old swimming pools next to old reactors isn't a permanent solution. Ugh.
Personally I'd prefer Australia to take all nuclear waste. We have most stable, empty land masses in the world. The only danger would be shipping. I guess at sometime in the future there will be ways of reprocessing the waste anyway, which would turn a profit. Even though Australia does not have any power reactors -- only one for medical purposes -- given that we are one of the largest producers of uranium in the world we should be standing up to store the waste. Maybe then the world will start considering how to manage other waste...
France does reprocess some waste and has even taken some off or us hands.
But this is always the problem with the "Nuclear solution" to our energy needs. No one mentions the waste issue.
