Well, he's kind of had it in for me ever since I accidentally ran over his dog. Actually, replace "accidentally" with "repeatedly," and replace "dog" with "son."

Majority Support for Warrants

Hi Folks,

The first poll that directly asks if Bush should be required to get a warrant to conduct wire taps is in. The good news is that a majority of 56% think that Bush needs a warrant. The bad news is that this corresponds very closely to the levels of overall support for Bush reported in the same poll.

It seems that about 40% of the population will do support just about anything Bush says.

Hey, if it's only 40% of the population who will blindly obey Bush, we've made some headway in the past 4 years... (sigh)

That's a hell of a bad question. "And suspected terrorists..."

How about "Should the government have the power to listen to private conversations between US citizens without a warrant, without the citizens knowing, and without any oversight at any time, because it claims that such power may be helpful in stopping terrorism?"

One of the things that really annoys me in the media coverage of this is that the White House seems to be getting a free pass on the whole "we're only doing this to people with ties to Al Qaeda" excuse. That's not the point of warrants. It's not that a warrant would prevent them tapping the phone of a suspected terrorist. It's that requiring a warrant would require them to have probable cause - a pretty low standard really even in the regular courts let alone in the FISA court.

The problem is not who the White House says their watching. The problem is that we have only the White House's word on it.
