From the CNN regular update:
There have been 1,083 coalition deaths, including 953 Americans, as of August 19, 2004. At least 6,497 U.S. troops have been wounded in action, according to the Pentagon. The Pentagon does not report the number of non-hostile wounded.

Speaking of the wounded. Is it my imagination or is the Doonesbury comic strip the only media source really covering the story of the wounded GIs?
From what I've seen of it (I don't get the paper every day and don't check out the Doonesbury website that often), the strip handles the issue in a mature, forthright and yet still humurous way - without being overly sappy. What do you all think?
As of today (8/26 - one week later) the Pentagon has added another 20 to the list of American war dead in Iraq. The press is not doing much to report this anymore. I wonder whether they are waiting for the "special" 1000 mark. That would be one explanation for the temporary abandonment of the old media axiom: "if it bleeds, it leads."
