Have you heard what Tom Tancredo said at the Tea Party convention this weekend?
"People who could not even spell the word 'vote' or say it in English put a committed socialist ideologue in the White House," he said.
We all know Tancredo is racist. But man, this is clearly a call to bring back Jim Crow laws, and it's not even that thinly veiled. Pitiful! The man needs help.
Also, as Jimmy Kimmel points out, a literacy test might not be such a good idea for the tea partiers ...

The Tea Baggers are increasingly reminding me of the old "Know Nothings" an anti-immigrant/anti-Catholic populist movement in pre-Civil War America.
They have other issues besides the anti-immigrant thing of course. But I suspect that a strongly xenophobic attitude towards immigrants would be an excellent predictor of support for the Tea Party demonstrations.
One other thing about the far right in America. Their "logic" is not based on some kind of serious study. Rather they think they believe that there is an objectively identifiable perfect set of policies. Furthermore, they believe that any disagreement with that obviously objective best policy reflects some major defect of character or intelligence. Based on my interactions with my relatives, one common theme is that they assume that the only reasonable explanations for someone not agreeing with them about policy is that they are either hopelessly stupid or malevolently anti-American or both.
BTW, this is the distillation of the Republican base that is left after 2006 and 2008. The question isn't can this group win an election alone - I doubt they can. But what other groups are willing to make a deal with this political devil to win?
As I see it, the Republicans have no message for 2010 and the TeaBagger message is not going to play beyond the small base. It would be like giving the Democratic party over to Code Pink or Moveon.org.
But the public doesn't like losers. And the Democrats are doing a good job of portraying themselves as feckless losers. Rather than claim their mandate - the biggest legislative majorities in a generation - they scurry from polls that say the obvious: that high unemployment and action on controversial issues is going to cost poll points in the short term.
Republicans will win by default in 2010 if the Democrats' message is "we're sorry we tried to pass health care reform." And that's the Pelosi message right now.
It pisses me off. Play hardball. Pass the senate bill, fix it through reconciliation, and damn the torpedos, full speed ahead - then celebrate your victory. That's what the GOP would do. And it's why they can win.
I agree LTG. The Tea Baggers are a paper tiger. If the Democrats get aggressive with their legislative agenda on health care and jobs bills, they will blow the Tea Baggers away in November.
