Alberto Gonzales has been confirmed by the Senate in a 60-36 vote this afternoon. Here's a link to a news article about it. Many Democrats held together and voted NO. Is this the sign we've been waiting for? Could this mean that the Democrats have finally found their spines again? I can hear the pundits crying Hallelujah! For this time, finally, the Democrats did not roll over!
Instead, they were rolled over.
Hooray. Yippee. Whoop-de-doo. I think I'll get out a firework to celebrate :-(

Another "Accountability Moment"

I am so pissed at Democrats right now. I wouldn't break out the fireworks yet. And I am trying to remain polite in my language about them.
I got a letter from my local congressman about all the good stuff he is doing in Congress. I like my Congressman. I like him a lot. And he is doing good stuff. But his letter mentioned not a single word about Iraq, social security, or anything else that was a major issue. Instead he focuses on his work with the OCEANS program and the dollars he brought back home. He has three military installations in his district, all on the closure list. So do you think he is going to highlight his opposition to the Iraq war? And that type of thing is all over the Democratic Party. They are really keeping their heads down and hoping not to be noticed. But in the process, they are totally denying reality.
This morning I heard a commentator from the Center for Progressive Policy (or some such centrist Democrat think tank) say that Democrats basically aren't worried about the President's social security "reforms" because they know it will never happen. HELLO! And the same commentator, when asked what Democrats need to do, said rather lamely, “They have to outline alternatives and prove why Bush’s plan is bad.” Talk about a canned response. Gee, isn’t that what they have been doing for 4 years now? Gee, and it has been so bloody effective.
Read between the lines, my friends. What this commentator is really saying is that Democrats have to agree that social security needs to change and then they have to cut some deal on privatization. So Bush will get some of what he wants ultimately. And it will happen after mid-terms.
I hope that the "opposition" in the nomination hearings is a sign of something deeper and bigger, but I really doubt it. They chose, after all, a pro-lifer from Nevada as their Senate minority leader. And they are squabbling over who will head the DNC.
The Democrats’ failure to grasp the realities of what Republicans are capable of is what keeps them lame. And it gives merit to the charge that liberals are too smug. Their token opposition to nominees is just that- token. John Stewart characterized Barbara Boxer’s fight against Rice as “a contentious but futile protest vote by Democrats”. He went on to say that for a fun drinking game, take a sip every time you hear those words used in regards to Democrats and by the time you’re finished, you won’t even notice the war in Syria. He may well be right.
